Obsession of the moment: Muxtape.com

Muxtape

I don't have much to say about today's obsession, other than to recommend it: It's the free online service Muxtape.com, which allows anyone who wants to upload exactly 12 songs as their own personal "mix tape," which is then presented in streaming format only to others who come by your page. Started by college DJ Justin Ouellette, the site contains no search function, no master database of songs; according to him, the entire point of the site is to discover new music through the personal tastes and whims of others, not by searching through a giant list for songs you already recognize. In fact, at this early date, the minimalism there can actually drive you a little crazy at times -- I'd love to see a better way to browse people's mix tapes, for example, than simply listing all their names in a random order on the front page -- but given that this is essentially a weekend project from a college student that's less than three months old at this point, the site is already a fine, fine way to completely blow off an entire boring Thursday afternoon. Much recommended, if you've got a little time and are looking for something interesting to do.
