America's Cup Headquarters #3, by Mario

Today's photo of the day is entitled "America's Cup Headquarters #3," and is by a Spanish Flickr member who goes only by "Mario." And yes, this is indeed a shot of what was the headquarters for the famed sailing race back in 2007, a Pritzker-award-winning building found in Valencia, Spain, and which turned out to be the catalyst behind an entire waterfront reclamation project in that city. See, turns out that the company who sponsors the prize-winning boat for each Cup gets to pick the host city for the next competition, but 2003's winner is from landlocked Switzerland; they decided to hold an open competition for the host city instead, with Valencia winning the bid by making it part of a multi-billion-dollar revitalization of their waterfront district. (By the way, the Swiss company that won the 2003 Cup also won the 2007 one; they have already announced that Valencia will be the host of the next competition as well, coming in 2009.)

Don't forget that I actually maintain a whole page of favorite photographs over at Flickr, for those who would like to see more. To express an interest in having your own work featured, just drop me a line at cclapcenter [at] gmail.com.
