Yet more interestingness: 21 January 2009

Obama inauguration grounds from satellite

Sickly sweet image from Obama's inauguration ceremony

Obama as Washington, coming New Yorker cover

Above, three interesting images spotted around the internets on Obama's inauguration day. Top: Satellite image of the inauguration grounds, from the same satellite that provides the images for Google Maps, spotted at TechCrunch; middle, cutesy moment from the ceremony itself, spotted at Jon Taplin's blog; and bottom, the coming cover of next week's New Yorker, by revered comics veteran Drew Friedman, spotted at Boing Boing.

Below are simple links to other interesting stuff I've come across on the web in the last day or two; they may or may not concern literature or photography, or indeed the arts at all. You can click here to learn more about how I compile this list and what software I use, if you're interested.

For first time in 77 years, GM is no longer world's top auto manufacturer
So let's not forget, the news wasn't all sunshine and roses yesterday: on the same day as Obama's inauguration, it was also announced that for the first time since 1932, General Motors is no longer the world's top auto manufacturer, finally losing out to Toyota who has been in a close second for years and years. Oh yes, that's right, we still have a lot of work to go, don't we?

Images: Aboard the disgraced Bush plane on its slink back to Texas
Bush staffer Mark McKinnon shares his thoughts on "The Daily Beast" on what it was like to ride the disgraced Bush plane back to Texas yesterday, and shares some candid photos as well. Man, you've never seen such a huge group of dorky rich white people before.

The Final Insult: Bush appointee f-cks up the Inaugural Oath
So what will go down as the absolute last official insult of the eight-year unending nightmare known as the Bush Regime? Well, that'd be Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts, a dangerously unqualified neocon ideologue who if you remember was essentially rammed through the confirmation process by Bush in 2005. The guy decided to be a smartypants and memorize the Inaugural Oath he was charged with delivering to President Obama yesterday; but of course, with him being a Bush appointee, he's naturally so incompetent that he managed to actually f-ck up even that, delivering the words out of correct order which is what then made Obama also flub in turn. Way to go, Bush! Way to remind us at least one more f-cking time of exactly what a bunch of corrupt, superstitious, unintelligent losers EVERY SINGLE PERSON OF YOUR ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION turned out to be!

High-placed Republican: "We're becoming the 'Talk Show Party'"
Linked to here, an otherwise ho-hum article from the WSJ about the overwhelming challenges facing Republicans right now during this crisis in their party history; I wanted to mention it, though, because of a great quote in it by John Feehery, a former aide to Dennis Hastert: "It will take a great effort for the Republicans not to be a talk-show party." It's yet more proof of what I've been talking about here since last November -- that the GOP is in danger of being completely taken over by a small minority of backwards radicals, essentially convincing most non-radicals to actually get involved more and more on the conservative side of the Democrats, basically turning the US into a one-party nation and with Republican candidates only viable in regional southern elections. Don't laugh -- this is exactly what happened after the War of 1812 with the Federalists, although in their case with radical New England liberals hijacking their party. The result, though, was the same.
