Yet more interestingness: 26 August 2009

Below are simple links to other interesting stuff I've come across on the web in the last day or two; they may or may not concern literature or photography, or indeed the arts at all. You can click here to learn more about how I compile this list and what software I use, if you're interested.

Author Frederick Pohl, 89, finally earns high-school diploma
Lovely news from the world of science-fiction: Author Frederick Pohl, 89, was just awarded an honorary high-school diploma from his old alma mater (Brooklyn Technical High School), after dropping out at the age of fifteen in the midst of the Great Depression. Pohl speculated on the occasion that if he had stuck around and actually graduated, he would've most likely had a career in the auto industry, and not written in the first place. What a shame that would've been for the rest of us!

Self-proclaimed multitaskers aren't actually very good at multitasking
An interesting research project, first reported by the BBC: Turns out that when people voluntarily identify themselves as "good multitaskers," they actually do much worse on multitasking tests than those who don't proclaim themselves to be good at them. Food for thought for all you Lifehacker obsessives out there.

Report: Every thousand UK surveillance cameras solve only one crime
A new damning report on the UK surveillance network is now out, claiming that for every thousand cameras the government has now installed, only one crime has actually been solved and the perpetrator arrested. England has a much worse problem with Big Brotherism right now than the US has, so it'll be interesting to see how the British public reacts to this.

Who's playing World of Warcraft? Dave Chappelle, Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood and more
A short but fascinating article from Tina Brown's The Daily Beast, highlighting some of the hundreds of celebrities who play online fantasy game World of Warcraft on a regular basis.

KRS-One creates new religion based on hip-hop
No, seriously.

US students fall dangerously behind international counterparts in science, math
The irony? US scores on these subjects have actually stayed the same for years; it's just that scores in other countries have been dramatically rising recently. The reverse brain-drain is here, and it's not going to be pretty.

Rumor: Third Nolan Batman movie will be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras
Hmm.

Exercise "addiction" hormones may help fight drug addiction
As anyone who regularly exercises knows, the body releases hormones during good workouts that are eerily similar to the pleasure addicts get while using drugs; new research, however, is starting to show that such exercise may actually help drug addicts when they're trying to go clean.

Kickstarter.com: Matching 'micro-patrons' with eccentric artists
A great article in the New York Times on startup microloan company Kickstarter.com, which specifically goes out and finds small amounts of money from 'micro-patrons' for eccentric artists with strong visions. A future possibility for CCLaP? Who knows -- the founders actually hand-pick all the projects featured there.
