It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today: Many Chicago residents, of course, will immediately recognize the subject of today's episode -- it's Nick Ostick, not only a published author and tireless supporter of our local literary community, but also the owner of basement press RAGAD and their associated live-event series here in the city. RAGAD's latest event is coming up this weekend, in fact, which finally gave me a good excuse to sit down with Nick, and yak for 45 minutes over cocktails about the "scene," his projects, and how exactly is the best way to break into a large urban artistic community in the first place. And don't forget, if you download the MP4 linked to below (or simply subscribe to the iTunes channel), you'll get images and chapters and hyperlinks as well!

The view from my "DJ booth," aka my Uptown apartment here in Chicago, on a cold and gray evening when I literally have nothing better to do than to spin some fun indie-rock music.

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today (er, tonight, I mean): It's cold and gray and snowy and miserable here in Chicago this week, not unexpected at all for this city in March, which means it's time for another all-music special of the CCLaP Podcast, this time featuring a total of 11 slightly nerdy indie-rock bands for your intellectual perusal. Interspersed at each break with my thoughts about each band and about college-rock in general, I hope that this 40-minute mix will serve you well on your next gym outing, dog walk, bus ride or whatever it is that you're doing while listening to this podcast and desperately trying to kill two-thirds of an hour. And don't forget, if you download the MP4 version of this podcast (linked to below) and listen to it through your iTunes/iPhone/iPod, chapters and links and images will be at your disposal as well!

Hey, guess what -- it's time for the 2008 return of the CCLaP Podcast! Oh, and I've got a great interview to present to you today; it's with Jason Fried, not only one of the founders of Chicago software company 37signals (one of the most successful internet startups in the entire American Midwest), but also an unconventional business wonk and deep thinker, who has a lot of interesting and unusual things to say about entrepreneurialism and creative endeavors. A lot of his advice concerning startups I think is not only useful for traditional business types but also small artistic groups (people starting up new galleries and literary magazines, for example); that's why I was so excited about having him on the podcast, and why I hope that you'll get a chance to listen to the entire thing too. Don't forget, by the way, that if you download the MP4 linked to below and listen to it using iTunes, an iPod or an iPhone, chapters and images and live weblinks will be at your disposal as well!

(<strike>By the way, sorry if the streaming version above isn't working when you're visiting; Vudyo, the service I use, has been especially crappy in the last couple of weeks. Can anyone please recommend a stable, free service like YouTube but for user-uploaded streaming audio? Why is it so hard to find a service like this for audio but so easy for video?</strike> UPDATE: I successfully moved over to iMeem this weekend. Thanks for the tip, Ben Tanzer!)

Happy New Year, everyone! As you can tell, I've been keeping posting here at the site lately to a minimum, in that the majority of CCLaP's readers are away from their computers for the long holiday week; I thought, however, since it was New Year's Day and all, I'd go ahead and post a special extra edition to the CCLaP Podcast for those who are still around. (For those who are keeping track, then, this marks a grand total of 22 episodes the CCLaP Podcast managed to produce in the second half of 2007, including a couple of episodes that consisted of two parts.) This is not much of an extra, to tell you the truth, just a recording of my friend Ken Kase, a musician in St. Louis who was featured in episode 17 of the regular podcast, back in November; this is a recording of his song "Coffeehouse of Doom," done during a rehearsal with his full band over Thanksgiving. I apologize in advance for the poor quality of this recording, which was essentially done in a person's basement using a single roving microphone; that said, I do hope you enjoy it, and I thank Ken once again for the chance to record it in the first place. Thanks again for a great year, everyone, and I hope you're looking forward to the return of CCLaP's regular publishing schedule, starting tomorrow.

It's <strike>Monday</strike> Tuesday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast; today's episode, in fact, will be the last new one of 2007. Today: We all know how fun it is to listen to a famous person talk, but what about all those day-to-day working artists in big cities as well, doing sometimes very innovative things to establish a more direct connection between themselves and their passionate audience? Chicago author Ben Tanzer is such a person, whose first novel Lucky Man came out earlier this year with basement press Manx Media; lacking the resources of a major publishing house, he has instead been using online tools such as a blog and YouTube promotional videos to build awareness of the novel, coupled with as many out-of-town readings as he can afford as a husband and father as well. I thought it would be nice to end this first year of CCLaP's podcast, then, with a detailed talk with Tanzer about all these subjects, as well as the daily highs and lows of being a first-time working novelist in a big Midwestern city. Also featuring the music of Creative Commons recording artists Genetic druGs and Funky C. And don't forget, if you download the MP4 version (linked below) and listen to it in iTunes, an iPhone, or a video iPod, chapters and images and links will be at your disposal too!

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today: It's been a cold and snowy week here in Chicago, which means it's time yet again for an all-music episode of the podcast, i.e. "I didn't feel like hustling around in the snow and cold to get an interview done this week." Featuring the music of Jens Lekman, Stark, Hangar 18, Caribou, Jose Gonzalez, Minus the Bear, and Saint Etienne, all of whom have released their music in a way that legally allows me as a podcaster to play it for you.
It's <strike>Monday</strike> Wednesday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. And hey, it's a special St. Louis version of the podcast this week as well, where I had the chance to talk with an old friend of mine, musician and jazz critic Ken Kase. This is a music-heavy episode, just to let you know in advance; it features four songs of Ken's, including a sneak preview of the brand-new "Shiner" (from his upcoming EP Five Songs About Chicago), as well as a special acoustic version of his hit "Pauline," performed exclusively for this podcast. And don't forget, if you download the MP4 version (linked to below) and listen to it through iTunes, an iPhone or a video iPod, you'll have access to chapters and links and photos as well!

Conducted from a recent fundraiser for the group, at a stunning rooftop condo overlooking the Loop's Millennium Park.
(Why yes, I am aware that the CCLaP iTunes channel isn't currently working! The problem is that Apple requires podcasters to include a bunch of customized fields in their RSS feed, in order to get the things associated with an iTunes channel to work correctly; and ever since Movable Type 4 was installed at the CCLaP website a few weeks ago, the complicated series of plug-ins I had been using to generate these customized fields no longer works. If you are familiar with Movable Type 4 and have some advice on how to best get my iTunes channel working again, I do hope that you'll drop me a line at cclapcenter [at] gmail.com; I and the entire CCLaP audience thank you in advance!)

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today, a half-hour talk with Chicago writer Elizabeth Crane, author of the popular story collections When the Messenger is Hot and All This Heavenly Glory; our conversation was a freewheeling one that touched on a lot of subjects, including Crane's unique writing style, the slippery line between autobiography and fiction, and why she means nothing specifically political when talking about creepy men. Also featuring the music of Creative Commons recording artists Letting Up Despite Great Faults and Datarock. Don't forget, if you download the MP4 version and listen to it through iTunes, an iPod or an iPhone, chapters and images will be available too!

(Up on your Movable Type 4? I need your help! The upgrade was installed here this weekend, in fact, and has played havoc with the complicated plugin setup I previously had in place, that creates the custom fields necessary for my iTunes channel to work. If anyone knows how to reinstall such a system in the newest version of MT, do please drop me a line at cclapcenter [at] gmail.com and let me know. Thanks!)

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast.
Welcome to part 2 of the latest episode of the CCLaP Podcast, which also doubles as part 4 of the center's recent look at Chicago filmmaker Joe Swanberg (and here's part 1, part 2 and part 3, for those who need it), specifically the second half of an interview I conducted with him last week at Bucktown's Swim Cafe (ironically enough where Swanberg has filmed scenes from several of his past projects). Yesterday we talked about Joe's education and the start of his career; today we discuss everything that's happened to him since 2006, including his features LOL and Hannah Takes The Stairs, his recent deal with the Independent Film Channel, and what exactly he thinks of that much-discussed term "mumblecore" anyway. Also featuring the music of Creative Commons recording artists St. Etienne and Spiraling. Don't forget, if you download the MP4 and listen to it through iTunes, an iPod or an iPhone, you'll get access to chapters and images as well!

Don't forget, by the way, that Swanberg's latest movie Hannah Takes the Stairs is being slowly premiered in theatres across the nation even as we speak; here in Chicago, for example, the film will screen at the Siskel Film Center in the Loop from October 19th through the 25th, and with Swanberg in attendance and answering questions both Friday and Saturday.

It's Monday, which means it's time for the CCLaP Podcast; and today's episode happens to also be part 3 of CCLaP's look this month at Chicago filmmaker Joe Swanberg (and here's part 1, part 2 and part 4, for those who need it), specifically an interview I conducted with him last week at Bucktown's Swim Cafe (ironically enough where Swanberg has filmed scenes from several of his past projects). Please be warned that this is a much longer episode than is usually the case at this podcast, with the final running time of this interview being close to 90 minutes; it's so long, in fact, that my podcast-creation software (GarageBand) couldn't handle it, meaning that I had to cut the episode in two. Today is part 1, where we talk about Swanberg's beginnings at Southern Illinois University, his time as an administrator at the Chicago International Film Festival, his first full-length feature Kissing On the Mouth, his adult web-based soap opera Young American Bodies, and what it's like for a filmmaker and his wife to simulate making love on-camera...but not with each other. Also featuring the music of Creative Commons recording artists Mocha Lab and Plastic Operator.

(UPDATE: I'm having some problems with the streaming version, of course, because you can't have streaming audio on the web without there being profound problems. Sigh. Why is streaming audio twice as problematic as streaming video, which technically is twice as difficult? Anyway, the MP4 version linked to should be working just fine, if you'd rather listen that way [which I encourage you to do]. Hopefully the streaming version will be working well soon too.)

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. (By the way, would your business be interested in underwriting the CCLaP Podcast? Do be sure to drop me a line at cclapcenter [at] gmail.com to talk more.) Today, I talk with Julie Saltzman and Susan Karp of the Uptown Writers Space; think of it as kind of like a cafe, where you can both work and socialize, but with a cleaner and quieter space than a public cafe, and a monthly membership fee to gain access. The first half of this episode is a traditional interview with Susan and Julie; then the two give me an "audio tour" of the facilities, which is supplemented in real time with photos if you are listening to this in iTunes, on a video iPod, or on one of them fancy-schmancy iPhones. (Don't worry; you can also go to Flickr, via the link below, to see just the photos on your own.) Also featuring the music of Creative Commons recording artists Andrew Bird and The Rosebuds.

It's <strike>Monday</strike> Tuesday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. In this episode, I talk with Brett Farmiloe, founder of the intriguing creativity/business website PursueThePassion.com (or PTP); basically he and some friends tour the country each summer in a giant RV, interviewing people like entrepreneurs, artists, professional athletes, and others who are pursuing careers based on their passion for that subject, versus how much money can potentially be made. (And for disclosure's sake, let me confess that I was one of the people interviewed for PTP's 2007 tour; it's how Brett and I met in the first place.) This episode also features the music of Creative Commons recording artists Nimibear and Demerit 7. Don't forget, if you download the MP4 version and listen to it through iTunes, an iPhone or a video iPod, you'll get chapters and images too!

It's here! It's finally here! That is, my new Zoom H4 high-end digital audio recorder is here, finally allowing me today to produce an episode of the CCLaP Podcast in the style I always meant the podcast to be (audio only, competently edited, 20 to 30 minutes in length, featuring long-form interviews and lots of Creative Commons music). Only one problem, in fact, that I don't have any interesting artists to interview this week; so instead I present an all-music episode today, featuring different experiments with the new recorder cut with some great pop music I've been able to find online recently. Enjoy -- and don't forget, if you download the MP4 and listen to it through iTunes, the iPhone, or a video iPod, different photos and live web links will show up with each segment too!

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today: A five and a half minute interview with GW Welsh, founder of the multimedia company Greater Wealth Productions, conducted at one of their recent fundraisers at Lakeview's Spot6 nightclub. Also includes footage of Chicago writer Kate Cullen, Indiana cartoonist Andrew Dimitt, and Georgia band The North And South (which I accidentally call "The North" in the podcast), plus the visual artwork of "Corey." (And for the sake of disclosure, please be aware that Kate Cullen is a personal friend of mine.)

(UPDATE: Streaming version now working, although the downloadable MP4 is of much higher quality, for those who care about such things. For those having a similar problem with their own videos [that is, an iMovie project featuring still photos that won't stream online correctly], the secret is to save the file in the 3GP format instead of the MP4 one.)

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today, a four-minute video tour of the Harold Washington Library Center; not only the central branch of the entire Chicago Public Library system, but at 750,000 total square feet of space, also the largest public library on the planet (according to the Guinness Book of World Records).

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast. Today, a four-minute interview with Jonathan Messinger -- host of the monthly literary event "The Dollar Store Show" (where this interview was conducted), co-founder of small press Featherproof, Books Editor of "Time Out: Chicago" and more. Recorded at super-duper-indie-rock club The Hideout, at Wabansia and Elston. <strike>Oh, and good/bad news about the CCLaP iTunes channel; the good news being that the iTunes Store stayed up long enough this weekend for me to submit the channel, the bad news being that no one at Apple has actually reviewed it yet. Guess they're a little busy right now with the zillion new iPhone owners here in America.</strike> (UPDATE: CCLaP iTunes channel now live!)

It's Monday, which means it's time for another episode of the CCLaP Podcast; this time, a four-minute interview with Andrew Huff, editor-in-chief of Chicago arts-and-entertainment website GapersBlock.com, caught at one of their monthly reader get-togethers, this time at Xippo in the Lincoln Square neighborhood (Damen and Grace). Sorry for the crappy audio! This will no longer be an issue just as soon as my new digital audio recorder arrives, which I'm expecting in the mail any day now. Oh, and the reason we both laugh near the end? Because Xippo is across the street from a fire station, and Andrew was joking beforehand how it'd just be our luck to have a firetruck take off in the middle of our interview...which is then what exactly happened.

Sorry as well that the official CCLaP iTunes channel isn't created yet; leave it to me to pick the same weekend that the iPhone first came out, leaving the iTunes store down just about every time I tried to access it. If you have iTunes, though, you can go ahead and add the CCLaP Podcast manually to your list if you want, by choosing "Advanced" and then "Add Podcast" and then the address www.cclapcenter.com/podcast.xml. By the way, turns out to be surprisingly difficult to get a Movable Type feed ready for iTunes; you need to add two plug-ins first, so that you can add the specific meta data iTunes is looking for in your feed, that Movable Type itself doesn't include. For any fellow MT users who want to try it*, here's an excellent step-by-step guide by Adrian Sevitz.

*And psst -- the two bugs that Sevitz talks about in that guide have now been fixed by the plug-in's developer; you can essentially now ignore all that fine print in step 2, and simply install the plug-in.

CCLaP Podcast 01: Literago launch party

Well, what do you know -- the CCLaP Podcast is finally here! For those who don't know, I'm going to be producing an episode of the podcast hopefully each week, which will hopefully be getting posted to the website every Monday; it will be a mix of low-fi video reports from various Chicago artistic events (like today's), and high-quality audio interviews with various artists who either live in or are passing through Chicago (just as soon as my new digital audio recorder arrives, that is, which I'm expecting any day now). You can expect all future video reports to be from two to five minutes in length; audio interviews will be from 15 to 30 minutes.

Anyway, today's episode is a total length of 1:45, and is a video report from the launch party this weekend for new Chicago literary website Literago.org. The party was a lot of fun, to tell you the truth; so fun and packed, in fact, that neither of Literago's co-founders (Gretchen Kalwinski and Eugenia Williamson) ended up with the spare time to be interviewed, leaving me with a bunch of cellphone-camera footage of drunk people dancing and not a lot else. The pathetic results can be viewed above right now, for anyone with Flash installed on their computer or mobile device; or you can download the MP4 file through the link below.

Remember, this podcast is being released under a Creative Commons license; it means that I'm giving you permission to make unlimited copies of this video, to post it at your own website if desired, and also to convert it into whatever format works best for you, as long as you neither change the contents nor charge money. (In fact, if you do end up converting the file into another format, make sure to email me a copy at cclapcenter [at] gmail.com; I'll post it here as well, and give you a thank-you at the bottom of this entry.) Music: "Mannequin" by Cats & Jammers; used under the terms of their Creative Commons license. iTunes channel coming tomorrow, I promise. And yes, for all you smarties who have already figured it out; this was inspired by that Miranda July website that's been making everyone go so crazy recently. I'm such a hack!
